NLACRC TRAINING & EVENTS


NLACRC Self-Advocacy Group Meetings
The NLACRC Self-Advocacy Group is a social support group that is run by and for adults with intellectual disabilities. The group meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 10:45 a.m. to 12 noon at St. Michael's, 16643 Vanowen St., Van Nuys.

Future meeting dates:

January 17th - Speaker topic: Your Rights & Responsiblities

February 21st - Valentine treat and plan group's 21st anniversary party

March 20th - 21st anniversary party. Treats, music, fun. Pay at door - cost .50 cents. RSVP by 3/16.

April 17th - Meeting. Vote for new officers.

May 15th - Meeting, finish voting & plan picnic.

June 19th - Picnic, 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Cost $4. RSVP and payment due by 6/15.


Just 4 Us Group Movie Day
The Just 4 Us Group is run by and for adults with developmental/intellectual disabilities. Sat., Jan. 21st, 2012, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Regency Granada Hills 9, 16830 Devonshire St., Granada Hills. Movie ticket is $6.50 plus $2 for 3D. Bring extra money to buy a snack. Please RSVP to Suzanna by 1/14 by calling 818-421-4439.






















































RESEARCH STUDIES (ESTUDIO DE INVESTIGACIÓN)

The studies listed below are posted as a public service for interested parties. Participation is voluntary. NLACRC services will not be affected in any way if a NLACRC family or consumer chooses to participate in, not to participate in, or withdraw from a research study, and participation is at the consumers/ parent/ guardians own risk, and participants agree to hold NLACRC harmless in the event he/she experiences any real or perceived harm because of his/her decision to participate in the research study.

Emotion and Personality Lab Research Study
The Emotion and Personality Lab in Psychology Department at California State University, Northridge, is offering $70 to parents and sons in the community that are willing to participate in a two-hour study. You are invited to participate if you meet the following qualifications:

Your son is 12-18 years old and has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome or High Functioning Autism.
-
Your son is able to complete 2 hours of psychological tests including computer tests.
-
Your son must also use English as a primary language.
- You and your son have NO audio or visual impairments.

Calling all kids with cerebral palsy for a free exercise program
Looking for a great way to get your child excited about exercise? Join a 12-week after school workout group beginning in August. Each child will be taught fun and safe exercises. In order to qualify for this free program, your child must be:
-medically diagnosed with spastic or diplegic cerebral palsy -7-17 in age - able to walk with or without an assistive device

This program will consist of an aquatic exercise program at the Center of Achievement at CSUN and a home program complete with full training. Each child will receive complimentary: • 3D Gait Assessment • Computerized Balance Assessment • Individualized Exercise Program

The SEEDS Program - UCLA Research Study
This is a 20-week program for foster and adoptive parents and caregivers and their young children. You can learn about how to find services for your child, how to better understand and respond to your child's feelings and behavior, and how to have more positive playtime with your child. The program is free for eligible families. Families may be paid up to $225 for their participation. View the flyer for more information.

CCAF's Communications Access Fund Grants
The California Communications Access Foundation (CCAF) is now accepting applications for its Communications Access Fund Grants. The CCAF Communications Access Fund will award grants to community-based nonprofit or educational organizations in California which establish projects and programs designed to improve existing services or technology or encourage new services or technology that will make spoken, verbal or signed communication easier for people with disabilities, including people who are seniors. The services or technology must assist people with disabilities or seniors to communicate, and can be "high tech" or "low tech," or anything in between. Grant amounts are anticipated to range from $10,000 to $100,000, with approximately $1 million available for competitive grants in 2012 and 2013. Applications for funding assistance are due on January 16, 2012 and must be for a 12-month performance period. These documents are available on the CCAF web site.

NEW! - Free educational seminars being offered in the Antelope Valley
The Office of Clients' Rights Advocacy (OCRA) in partnership with NLACRC is offering three free seminars. On Feb. 2nd is "Recent Changes by the State Legislature That May Impact Your Regional Center Services," March 1st is "Obtaining Special Education Services from the School District," and on April 5th is "Social Security Disability: Eligibility, Challenging Overpayments and Other Common Issues." The OCRA is also offering free legal clinics by appointment on these days as well. Please view the flyer for registration information and more details.

NEW! - Nami Basics
Nami Basics is a free and informative new signature education program for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illness. It is taught by trained teachers who are the parent or other caregiver of individuals who developed symptoms of mental illness prior to age 13 years. There are six classes each two and a half hours. NEW! - Inclusion Institute's 2012 Speaker Series
The first seminar in the series is being held on Saturday, Feb. 25th, 2012, 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Hart Hall (William Hart Park), 24151 Newhall Ave., Newhall. The topic is "Accessing Insurance for your Child's Therapies." Speakers will include Feda Alamaliti and Karen Fessel, Dr. P.H. Pre-registration required. Cost: $10 per person.. California Youth Leadership Forum for Students with Disabilities
July 23-27, 2012, California State University, Sacramento. Develop you leadership skills, and learn how to reach your academic, career, and independence goals. Talk with policy makers and educate them on ways they can improve the lives of young people with disabilities. Deadline to submit applications is Jan. 13, 2012. UC Davis MIND Institute Lecture Series
The UC Davis MIND Institute in Sacramento offers a series of lectures that are free and open to the public throughout the year. The MIND Institute Auditorium is located at 2825 50th Street, Sacramento. They also post past lectures on their web site.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program for Seniors
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank in collaboration with Community Integration Services is offering a free food kit once a month to seniors 60 years and older who meet certain program requirements. Please view the flyer for more information.

Get the IEP Your Child Needs
A child's IEP is a time for parents and educators to come together as a team to make important plans for a special needs child. This workshop will help you learn how to get what your child needs through the IEP. View the flyer for more information. Registration required: $10 per person or $15 per couple.

Family Focus Resource & Empowerment Center Trainings
California State University Northridge's (CSUN) Family Focus Resource & Empowerment Center offers trainings throughout the year at their San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley and Antelope Valley locations. Trainings such as IEP clinics, student record notebooks, parent rights under special education law, the IEP process and parents' rights and more are offered.

The KEN Project holds meetings once a month on a variety of topics related to children with special needs.

The Disability Rights Legal Center offers free education advocacy workshops the first Saturday of each month.

Sport fishing license applications available for NLACRC consumers
The Calif. Dept. of Fish and Game has provided us with applications for free one-yearr sport fishing licenses that are available to NLACRC consumers. Licenses are required for individuals 16+ years of age. We have a limited supply available. It takes approximately 4 weeks to process the application. For an application, please call (818) 756-6451.
